Summary and Topics

The Royal Institute of European Studies at CEU San Pablo University, the Spanish Association for Foreign Policy (APEE), and the Ramón Areces Foundation invite you to participate and submit papers for the II APEE Congress: International Relations in the Indo-Pacific, which will take place at the Ramón Areces Foundation (C. de Vitruvio, 5, Chamartín, 28006 Madrid) on June 25-26, 2025. All proposals must address one of the three topics outlined below.

1) International Relacions in the Asia-Pacific Region

This session will focus on foreign policy between China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, and Russia’s projection in the area, as well as the conflict and tensions in the Taiwan Strait. It will cover bilateral relations between the countries within the region and their international projection

2) International Relations in Southeast Asia-Pacific

This session will focus on the international relations of Southeast Asian countries, including their interactions, conflicts, and collaborations, as well as tensions in the South China Sea, the ASEAN organization, and their international projection.

3) International Relations in the Indian Ocean

This session will focus on India’s relationships with its neighbors and the interaction of forces among the states that make up the area. It will cover economic and geopolitical relations involving both Asia-Pacific states and global actors like Europe and the U.S.

Deadlines and conditions

For each of these topics, proposals exploring the position of the European Union and Spain regarding the region, both politically and economically/commercially, are welcome.

The deadline for submitting abstracts is May 5, 2025. Proposals should be sent to [email protected], and receipt will be confirmed.

As a general rule, proposals should be individual, with each person allowed to submit only one proposal. In exceptional cases, joint proposals of up to two people will be accepted. If selected, the presenters will be required to indicate who (or both) will present the paper in person. Abstracts should have a maximum length of 300 words and may be submitted in either Spanish or English. If a final draft or advanced text is available, it can be attached separately from the abstract. The proposal must also be accompanied by a CV of the author(s).

Submitting a proposal implies a commitment to present it in person in Madrid in the same language it was submitted, if selected.

An academic committee will select up to five papers per area based on the relevance of the topic, its originality, and quality. The decision will be communicated within 7 days after the submission deadline. The presentations will take place on the morning of June 26, 2025.

A volume with the papers and best communications from the Congress will be published. Acceptance of the proposal for oral presentation does not automatically imply acceptance for publication. Authors wishing to have their papers published in the collective volume must indicate this intention when submitting their proposal, which will be a positive factor during the selection process.

For publication, a final text of no more than 6,000 words, including the final bibliography, must be submitted. The document should be in Word format (Times New Roman, 12-point font for the main text and 10-point font for footnotes, if applicable), following APA citation rules. It should include keywords in Spanish and/or English, a table of contents, and a final bibliography. The final submission deadline will be October 15.
